BOTANISCHE TUINEN
2022 - NU
Tijdens de koude maanden een aantal jaar terug begon ik met het bezoeken van botanische tuinen. Ik werk graag ter plekke in mijn schetsboek en kleine panelen maar met koude handen gaat dat niet. Botanische tuinen boden mij een heerlijk warme werkomgeving en dynamische composities om mee te spelen.
In de Hortus botanicus leiden viel mij echter meer op dan de plantenpracht. Achterin de oude kas, een beetje verstopt achter een trap en een personeelsdeur staat een aquarium. In eerste instantie staarde ik een beetje terug in de ronde vissenogen en baande ik mijn weg verder door de kas. Maar dat mini aquarium bleef mij toch bij. Wat nou als die vissen niet in een hoekje gepropt waren maar zich met evenveel trots door de kas bewogen als de planten? Met deze gedachte ontstond mijn eerste serie over dit heerlijke onderwerp.
During the cold months a couple years back I began to visit botanical gardens. I love working outside in nature with small panels and my sketchbook but when my hands get cold it just doesn't work. Botanical gardens gave me a welcoming warm workspace with lots of dynamic compositions to play with.
While visiting the Hortus botanicus Leiden something other than plants caught my eye. In the back of the greenhouse, hidden away behind a staircase and a staff door was a aquarium. Initially I had some fun staring back at their round eyes and made my way further in the greenhouse. But the thought of that tiny aquarium stayed with me. What if those fish weren't crammed in a corner but moved around with an equal amount of pride as the plants? With that thought I started the first series of this marvelous theme.
In 2022 bezocht ik de botanische tuinen van Lyon. Tot mijn verbazing liggen de botanische tuinen in de stad in een openbaar park. Alles gratis te bezoeken, en er is veel! Struinend door de verschillende soorten kassen werd ik helemaal gelukkig. Alle verschillende soorten bladeren, bloemen én de architectuur van de kassen zelf. Ik wilde nu eigenlijk al nooit meer weg. Tijdens het lopen door de buiten tuinen zie ik ineens giraffennekken boven de bomen uitsteken. Achter de tuinen, in hetzelfde park, bleek óók nog een dierentuin te zitten. Mijn dag kon niet meer stuk!
In 2022 I visited the botanical gardens of Lyon. Which to my surprise are located in the middle of the city in a public park. All to visit free of cost, and there is much to see! Strolling through the various greenhouses I became happier with every step. All the different types of leaves, flowers ánd the architecture of the greenhouses themselves. At this point I already wanted to stay forever. Whilst wandering through the outside gardens all of the sudden I saw giraffes necks sticking out behind the trees. In the back of the park turned out to be a zoo. It made my day and I couldn't be happier!
